Guidelines for Sampling Aboveground Biomass and Carbon in Mature Central Hardwood Forests

چکیده
—As impacts of climate change expand, determining accurate measures of forest biomass and associated carbon storage in forests is critical. We present sampling guidance for 12 combinations of percent error, plot size, and alpha levels by disturbance regime to help determine the optimal size of plots to estimate aboveground biomass and carbon in an old-growth Central Hardwood forest. The analyses are based on five 100-percent inventories covering a 66-year time period. Disturbance regimes during that time included periods of grazing, low tree mortality, and high tree mortality. The size and number of plots recommended for estimating biomass and carbon changed with the type of disturbance. This information can be used to help design inventories of biomass and carbon in older forests.

A Comparison of Aboveground Biomass in Mature Old-Field Forests and Hardwood Forests of the Piedmont Using High Resolution LiDAR Data
In the face of climate change, policy makers are increasingly interested in utilizing forests for their ability to sequester carbon. Retaining carbon in forests is the objective of various programs that aim to combat climate change. With the growing role of forests in a mitigation strategy, and in order to create effective policies, there is much need for research and two of these research area...
متن کاملEstimating aboveground biomass using Landsat 7 ETM+ data across a managed landscape in northern Wisconsin, USA
Aboveground biomass (AGB; Mg/ha) is defined in this study as a biomass of growing stock trees greater than 2.5 cm in diameter at breast height (dbh) for stands N5 years and all trees taller than 1.3 m for stands b5 years. Although AGB is an important variable for evaluating ecosystem function and structure across the landscape, such estimates are difficult to generate without high-resolution sa...
متن کاملModeling Loblolly Pine Aboveground Live Biomass in a Mature Pine-hardwood Stand: A Cautionary Tale
Carbon sequestration in forests is a growing area of interest for researchers and land managers. Calculating the quantity of carbon stored in forest biomass seems to be a straightforward task, but it is highly dependent on the function(s) used to construct the stand. For instance, there are a number of possible equations to predict aboveground live biomass for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) growin...
متن کاملTotal aboveground biomass in central Amazonian rainforests: a landscape-scale study
Amazonian forests play a key role in the global carbon cycle, but there is much uncertainty about the quantity and distribution of carbon stored in these forests. We quantified total aboveground dry biomass (TAGB) in undisturbed central Amazonian rainforests, based on detailed estimates of all live and dead plant material within 20 1 ha plots spanning an extensive (ca. 1000 km) study area. TAGB...
متن کاملIntegrating management for old-growth characteristics with enhanced carbon storage of northern hardwood-conifer forests
Forest management practices emphasizing stand structural complexity are of interest across the northern forest region of the United States because of their potential to enhance carbon storage. Our research is nested within a long-term study evaluating how silvicultural treatments promoting late-successional forest characteristics affect aboveground biomass development in northern hardwood fores...
